This sequel series to the original Black Autumn Series, and focuses on the characters in the book Travelers. The authors set the series up to have three sequential groups of characters in each series that comes out. So Book 1 of Black AUtumn is part 1, Book 1 Of White Wasteland follows that.SO the book is set in the first actual winter of the collapse. It has 3 separate storylines of sub characters, Mat, Sage, and Cameron. The characters are all clearly dealing with separate dark issues, (again I dont like to put spoilers in until the end, where it will be clearly marked). I liked the varying moral dilemmas that each character is going through, and how they each deal with it.As I have mentioned in other reviews of the series, this is not the standard books of the genre. Not every character is cookie cutter. They are very different, and they have flaws, and make mistakes. To me those are some of the better teaching moments. If you accidently do something right, it is unlikely you learned something, you should always learn from a mistake. Many dystopian authors tend to not do that. They also tend to make main characters the "perfect man." That too is realistic.I have read a few other reviews on the series that were essentially too critical of the constant mention of Mormons. A good portion of these story lines are set in Utah. If you want to maintain some form of realism, you need to discuss that, and explain how Mormons are, because many people in the US have no clue. That is just good story telling. That aside, from here on out, I may ruin some plot lines, so if you keep reading, it is your fault. (SPOILER ALERT). I am going to be obtuse my comments. For the most part so that anyone who wants to come back and judge my review after reading the book can.I thought the debate in Mat's story line about Jensen was very well done. I think they may have "eviled" him up more than necessary, but what I have noticed in the books, is the authors have the story well planned out. So I have a feeling that particular part may well have had a purpose I have not seen yet, either that or it was used to explain William's hatred of the man and to justify the reaction. I was surprised that a Ranger was not a bit more outspoken with Jensen, but he was going through his own struggles of wanting to leave, and seemed to think if he can get the wall done, he can get out and wash his hands of the science guy and his plans. That said, I think the over riding lesson is to learn to be something other than a hammer, because not every problem you run across will be a nail.Sage actually grows more as a character. He is a 17 year old kid who managed to land in a fairly good spot. He is being manipulated by the players who have clearly out maneuvered him. Between the Chief and Cmsr. Pete (and wife) and Aimee, as well as being new there, and a kid, I thought they had him grow well. It sparks at the end when he decides he needs to make the RIGHT choice, over the easy one. By the end of his story in this book, he had transformed into an adult. This line also had a under lying theme, don't consider your opponent an idiot, because you will only fool yourself.Cameron, I really do not care for the character personally. However he is quite interesting. He personifies the concept of "I would rather be lucky than good any day of the week." I mean he should have died in the first book, but he gets away and manages to save his family, only to fall in with her "polygamist husband and family." Aside from battling starvation, and a really got illustration on the number of calories it takes to generate calories, his life turns to a series of unfortunate events that ends up replacing his wife . . . in a way he has the Ferris Bueller syndrome. The moral of this story line, just because someone walked a different path, does not make you any better. Thinking mostly of He and Isaih.Anyway, it is a good read and I suggest picking it up.
